Using Bedding to Create a Tranquil Bedroom Retreat

We spend one third of our lives sleeping, which means we spend a lot of time in our bedrooms. It's important that the bedroom be a place of respite, a place where we can unwind and relax, where we can escape from everyday life. A bedroom should be a sanctuary of peace.

Some bedrooms are so cluttered with junk, so devoid of personality and color that they can be wholly unwelcoming, simply a place to stop in for a bit of sleep before heading back to work. Many people can't even rest well in their bedrooms because the atmosphere is simply not conducive to quiet relaxation. They would never call their bedroom their "favorite room."

That's exactly what a bedroom should be. It should be so pleasing to all of your senses that you would rather be there than almost anywhere. Developing a harmonious space for yourself is as easy as purchasing an assortment of inexpensive bedding.

Start with choosing either a rich, dark color or a light, airy color. A dark color will project a sense of warmth and tradition, a light color, a feeling of sunshine and tranquility. In choosing colors for your bedroom, think: subdued and quiet.

Your bed will be the focal point of the room. Don't go overboard with patterns and hot colors. Choose one color that's a bit more dramatic and use it sparingly as a punch of color here and there throughout the room. Consider using small patterns on comforters and in curtains, or go with solid colors if your floor already has a busy pattern. Use color choices and designs that will allow your eyes and mind to rest and relax at the end of the day.

Create a feeling of luxury with a lot of pillows. Don't let anyone tell you that pillows are for decoration only. They come in handy when you want to "nest" in bed while you spend time with a loved one, catch up on reading, or watch a movie, especially if you don't have a headboard to rest against. There's something especially opulent about being surrounded by heaps of soft pillows.

Add an inexpensive matching or contrasting bed skirt for a luxurious look. Consider raising your bed up a little higher by placing the box springs on blocks and then use the underside of your bed to store those extra things that are scattered around your bedroom making it into a general mess. Don't allow any clutter to invade your bedroom.

Make sure that the lighting in the room is soft, bring in some small plants, and put out bowls of scented potpourri or use a lightly scented room spray.
